What is ball moss?
Ball moss (Tillandsia recurvata) is the grey, wiry clump you see on so many live oaks around San Antonio. It is not a true moss. It is an air plant related to pineapples and Spanish moss. It takes its moisture and nutrients from the air and does not feed on the tree like a parasite. So why remove it?
- It shades out the inner canopy. Heavy growth blocks light from interior branches, which then weaken and die back.
- It thrives where the tree is already struggling. Dense ball moss is often a sign of a crowded, shaded canopy that needs thinning.
- It adds weight and looks untidy. Heavily infested trees look grey and neglected, especially in winter.
- It spreads. Seeds drift on the wind to nearby trees, fences and power lines.
Our demossing process
- Inspect the canopyWe check how heavy the growth is and look for dead interior wood that should come out at the same time.
- Hand removalOur climbers work through the canopy and strip the ball moss by hand. It is the most thorough and tree-friendly method.
- Thin and cleanWe remove the dead twigs ball moss grows on and lightly thin the interior so light and air can get back in.
- Complete clean-upEvery clump and twig is raked up and hauled away so it does not reseed in your yard.
Demossing works best together with crown cleaning and thinning. A brighter, more open canopy is less welcoming to ball moss, so it takes longer to come back.
Keeping ball moss away
Ball moss will eventually return, because the seeds are everywhere in South Texas. A healthy, well-thinned oak holds it off much longer. Most homeowners find demossing every few years, together with routine pruning, keeps their trees clean and green.
