Mulching done right
Mulch is one of the best things you can give a tree, as long as it is applied correctly. We spread 2–3 inches in a wide ring and keep it pulled back from the trunk. A "mulch volcano" piled against the bark holds moisture and invites rot and pests. Good mulching keeps roots cooler in August, holds in water and slowly feeds the soil.
